Trash Heroes Canggu

The Trash Hero mission is to bring communities together to clean and reduce waste. We do this through:

  • Action and Awareness. Our volunteers pick up trash and motivate others to do the same. By spending a few hours together cleaning up, people gain a profound understanding of the need to reduce and better manage waste.
  • Education. We engage children through our multilingual kids’ programme, connecting environmental values with hands-on experience of the impact that plastic trash has on the ocean. Adults learn through doing, with actvities and workshops provided by our volunteers.
  • Sustainable Projects. We create long-term programmes that help communities to reduce and better manage existing waste, and strategies that will prevent future waste.
  • Inspiration. We motivate people to break free from plastic and become Trash Heroes in their everyday lives. With consistently positive messaging, and a philosophy of “small steps”, we remove the barriers to change and normalise a vision of a zero-waste world.
All our activities are committed to and aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. Find out more here.

We abide by the following principles, which we call “The Trash Hero Way“:
  • Be the change: we lead by example, showing not telling people what to do and being positive and respectful in thoughts, words and actions.
  • Be credible: we work independently, earning people’s trust and avoiding conflicts of interest.
  • Be selfless: we work for the public benefit, not for personal gain. We stay humble and put mission before ego.
  • Be responsible: we act transparently and are accountable for our decisions and actions to our local communities and to the Trash Hero Family. We uphold standards in order to support the global mission.
  • Think global, act local: we understand the big picture and the solutions needed, but start the change where we live.

Trash Hero believes that every one of us can be a Trash Hero.

Trash Hero World is the governing body of the global Trash Hero network. We are a non-profit organisation with charitable objectives, registered in Switzerland.

Trash Hero is a global volunteer movement, led, supported and governed by Trash Hero World.

At its heart is a growing grassroots network of chapters: unincorporated, community-based organisations, that run our programmes. Each is affiliated to Trash Hero World and their national Trash Hero organisation, if one exists.

Currently, the network extends to 17 countries around the world: Indonesia, Thailand, Malaysia, Myanmar, Singapore, Czech Republic, Romania, Serbia, Slovakia, Switzerland, Poland, Holland, Georgia, Germany, USA, Australia, Japan.

In countries with a significant number of chapters, we have begun registering country-level organisations, in order to facilitate programme coordination and represent local voices both on the national stage and within the movement.

As of June 2021, the registration of the non-profit entities:

  • Trash Hero Indonesia;
  • Trash Hero Thailand;
  • Trash Hero Czech Republic;
  • Trash Hero GB; and
  • Trash Hero Myanmar

has been completed.

The registration of Trash Hero Malaysia is in progress.

Trash Hero World serves as the governing body for the global network of chapters and country organisations and supports the movement both financially and structurally. It is a non-profit association, registered in Switzerland (UID CHE-234.539.479) and exempt from taxes under Swiss law (Register no. 1993507, Canton Luzern). The association is governed in accordance with its Articles of Association by an unpaid board of directors, drawn from diverse backgrounds in business and professional life.

Additional programme support for the global network is provided by Trash Hero GB, a community interest company based in the UK.

Work is ongoing to implement a formal governance structure for the global network that will both regulate our rapid expansion and give international branches a greater voice in decision-making.
